Heritage

As early as the 1st century BC, the Romans settled on the lands of La Gordonne to cultivate the vines and enjoy its wines, but also — and above all — to benefit from the exceptional microclimate of La Gordonne’s “schist amphitheatre”.
In 1300, the Carthusian monks of La Verne, based in Pierrefeu-du-Var, took over the vineyard. Later, the Duke of Sully, Superintendent of Finances under Henry IV and a renowned connoisseur, stayed several times at “La Gordonne”, then known as “La Mayon d’Aurran”.

Planted with vines and olive trees, the estate takes its name from the Councillor de Gourdon, who acquired it around 1650.
In 1652, “La Gordonne” was permanently established. In 1663, the estate, along with its bastide, vineyards, and olive groves, was purchased by Monsieur le Conseiller de Dedons, Seigneur of Pierrefeu.
In 1754, the Dedons family, by then the Marquises of Pierrefeu, still owned the estate. Shortly before the French Revolution of 1789, records mention a new owner, the Bishopric of Toulon.

In 1850, the château and its buildings were fully restored.

Since then, the château has continued to produce and market its wines. Today, it stands as one of the jewels in the crown of the Vranken Estates vineyards. With the exceptional quality of its wines and the creation of the Chapelle Gordonne cuvée, Château La Gordonne has entered a new era.

Le Château

An architectural gem and a true symbol of the Provençal art of living, Château La Gordonne now reveals all its splendour. A heritage of the 18th century, the building captivates with its harmonious proportions and elegant structure, composed of a ground floor, an upper floor, and a vast brick-vaulted cellar. The cellar houses the cellar master’s impressive sandstone eggs, used in the production of exceptional cuvées, embodying precise, demanding, and innovative winemaking.

At the heart of the estate, the winery is an emblematic space where the wines are born. The sandstone eggs, with their sculptural presence, symbolize the union of tradition and modernity, embedding winemaking expertise in a contemporary approach while remaining true to the soul of the place.

The château also stands as a cultural showcase. On the ground floor, the historic rooms display a collection of artworks carefully integrated into the original décor. The cabinet of curiosities intrigues visitors with its unique atmosphere and remarkable ceiling painting, a true artistic treasure.

The spectacular wine room, adorned with immense butterflies, creates a poetic dialogue between wine and nature. The grand salon and dining room extend this harmony: tapestries, ceramics and decorations tell of the elegance, history and soul of the château.

The Garden of Eden

Outside, the gardens complete this overall vision. Designed as a true Garden of Eden, they feature a rose garden and landscaped areas that invite contemplation. In this preserved setting, nature, art, and wine come together in perfect harmony, making Château La Gordonne a place where heritage and creativity exist in perfect balance.

A south-facing haven of peace, the garden of Château La Gordonne once served as an orchard. Today, it is accessed via an impressive avenue of palm trees, a symbol of the elegance and exoticism dear to the château’s spirit.

The garden extends towards the east. The dominant landscape of the estate is the Mediterranean woodland—a low forest of highly branched trees.

Along the walk, we encounter pines (Pinus brutia, Pinus pinea, Pinus halepensis), juniper, and of course oaks (Quercus coccifera, Quercus pubescens, Quercus suber), as well as myrtle and Mediterranean buckthorn (Rhamnus alaternus).Along the way, we come across pines (pinus brutia, pinus pinea, pinus halepensis), juniper and, of course, oaks (Quercus cocifera, Quercus pubescens, Quercus super) as well as myrtle and neprun alaterne.

The rose garden

A symbol of beauty and inspiration throughout the centuries, the rose has journeyed from Antiquity through Christian tradition and Renaissance poetry, before becoming the queen of gardens in the 19th century.

This is the spirit behind the Château La Gordonne rose garden, inspired by two iconic rose gardens: that of Empress Josephine at Malmaison and that of Madame Pommery in Chigny-les-Roses.

Conceived as a true natural laboratory, it supports the cellar master in his pursuit of precision. Along the walk, shades unfold from the softest pink to deeper tones, offering a living palette that echoes the art of blending. Here, each colour tells a story of terroir, and every nuance inspires a cuvée—delicate, velvety, luminous—reflecting the wines of Château La Gordonne.

The flower

As a single block, the Château La Gordonne terroir extends across a schist amphitheatre facing the sea, shaped by a privileged microclimate.

Within the estate, flowers hold a special place. Created in 2022 in partnership with the Conservatoire Méditerranéen Partagé, a 4-hectare plot embodies this commitment to biodiversity: ancient grape varieties, fruit trees, blooming peonies… and, as a guardian of time, a century-old olive tree.

Here, the peony symbolizes the balance between culture and nature: a lively, delicate, deeply Mediterranean note that tells the story of La Gordonne as much as it embellishes it.

Terroir & commitment

“When you truly know your land, you know where the wind comes from, the length and unpredictability of the sunshine, the play of light and shadow, the grape varieties and their stories.
We love listening to the elders as they tell the story of the land, or the legends that give each plot even more character. Above all, we love walking through the vineyards, listening to the birds, and following the rhythm of the vegetation.
In the end, we seek to craft a wine that reflects its land—generous and sun-drenched—where its colour expresses the softness of a region unique in the world, and where the nose reveals the most delicate aromas of the Mediterranean.”

A rare terroir in the heart of Pierrefeu

In the heart of the Côtes de Provence appellation, Château La Gordonne is rooted in an exceptional terroir: Pierrefeu, often described as a true Provençal “golden triangle.” The estate has undergone a meticulous parcel-by-parcel survey to understand the vineyard in all its complexity: grape varieties, soil composition, sunlight exposure, altitude, and wind patterns.
Here, the wine estate is conceived as a living harmony, made up of carefully tended parcels, each cultivated differently, in an intimate relationship with the land.

Tailor-made viticulture, guided by precision

This deep understanding gives rise to a sustainable, tailor-made approach to viticulture, attentive to natural balances and the identity of each site. It guides the timing of the harvest, in the pursuit of the perfect moment, as well as the vinification of each parcel separately when the terroir requires it. Then comes the art of blending, which allows for the creation of precise cuvées, faithful to their origin and to the unique expression of each plot.

A lasting commitment to life

For many years, the estate has been committed to responsible viticultural practices, with a focus on integrated vine protection, soil vitality, and the integration of the vineyard into a protected natural environment where biodiversity plays a key role.
The vines are either naturally grassed or sown with legumes to nourish the soils, then carefully managed according to the nature of the land and the needs of the plant. True to Provençal traditions, the estate has also welcomed sheep to graze among the vineyards for over thirty years, encouraging natural fertilisation and a virtuous ecological balance.
